I always have a couple widgets on my desktop, and was wondering if there is anyway to stop download icons from being placed beneath them (in particular, the default area for new icons, the top left corner, is where I like to have a calendar). Is there a way to define an area in which icons should not appear? I don't have any icons on my desktop generally (OD+ serves that need), but I do prefer to download to the desktop so that the files are easily accessible. Any possible setting tweaks or download suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I used to wonder the same thing but now I just have a downloads folder that I keep organized so I can find new downloads quickly and I keep a shortcut to the folder on my OD bar. Anyway, the only semi-solution I was ever able to find was to keep a 'place holder' icon behind the item (in your case the calendar widget) that will keep the newly downloaded files from showing up behind your calendar. It would be nice if widgets had some setting or were able to tell if an icon was placed underneath them in order to move it but it's really not the widgets job, since it's just a window on the desktop.

I just hide all my icons and use a DTX object to open the desktop folder when needed.

I'm usually downloading research (mostly pdf's), so it's nice having them staring at me on the desktop so I actually do something with them. When I get some time, I'll try to put together some sort of widget that'll be a better work around (I'm thinking a widget that displays the contents of some folder--automatically). But, it's the end of term (papers to write...and grade), so it'll have to wait a couple weeks.
